In Memoriam - Shakuntala Devi

In Memoriam: Shakuntala Devi

In 2010, our beloved Shakuntala died.  She had taught at the ashram school for 35 years.  Every day, even when she became elderly, had difficulty walking, she made the journey from town to the ashram.  In 2008, she led a kirtan in our meditation hall.  I will remember that day that she led the kirtan for as long as I live. Her strong voice and spirit filled the hall. The last time I saw her was in 2010.  She had had a run in with a donkey and fell.  She suffered a broken foot.  I had just arrived from Canada and heard the news and went directly to the government hospital in town.  She had her foot tied to the base of the bed to keep it stable. The next time I went to visit, she had been moved to another hospital as they had discovered a fracture in the hip that required surgery.  She did not survive the surgery.
